My league recently rejected a proposal reducing the number of keepers from 9 to 6. Some wanted to counter the huge benefit stumbling on a mike trout brings, but someone argued that reducing the number of keepers actually magnifies the value of a mike trout. With fewer keepers, it would be harder for teams to create a keeper slate to counter mike trout. Additionally, trading for stars during the season might be more difficult because teams will have a higher bar for keeping players with only 6 spots instead of 9. Does anyone agree or disagree with this thinking?
To clarify, this is a salary escalation league, not a straight keeper.

My league recently rejected a proposal reducing the number of keepers from 9 to 6. LESS IS MORE - KEEPERS SUCK
but someone argued that reducing the number of keepers actually magnifies the value of a mike trout. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO MAGNIFY THE VALUE OF A TROUT
With fewer keepers, it would be harder for teams to create a keeper slate to counter mike trout. IT ALSO WEAKENS TROUTS TEAM
Additionally, trading for stars during the season might be more difficult because teams will have a higher bar for keeping players with only 6 spots instead of 9. I'D GUESS THAT MOST WOULDN'T TRADE THEIR 1-4 IN ANY CASE MAKING 5-9 AVAILABLE REGARDLESS OF KEEPER STATUS.
Does anyone agree or disagree with this thinking? KEEPER LEAGUES SUCK (EXCEPT YOURS POGO)

I think the less keepers the better, as the available players in the pool increase and therefore increase the chances of every team to compete. One player cannot win a championship, so with a solid top 6 keepers and a good draft one can beat any team with Trout. Plus, injuries and down years can upend any team that looks good on paper preseason.

I don't have a salary cap in my league and it's H2H but we keep 4 minimum and 6 max....If we keep 4 we get two supplemental picks based on the previous years record. We also have one pullback where once a player is taken from the players you left unprotected you get to pull one back. This league has been around for over twenty years and has been working very well. Also helps if a team is taking over a team you aren't stuck with a ton of players who are bad,you can be right back in the mix.Just my two cents...

Love keeper leagues much more then boring redraft leagues. Makes all your moves/trading count. Cant just restart next year. I like keeping about 12 per year. We can start trading the day after the regular season ends so fantasy baseball year round. I would hate if my league cut my keepers down since I have built my team around 12 of them.

My take is that reducing the number of keepers makes it harder for a team to compete with a Mike Trout team. Mike Trout at a few dollars is a huge advantage, and although it doesn't guarantee a win, it makes it a whole lot easier.
My reasoning is when you only have 6 keepers instead of 9, it's harder to build enough surplus value to match Trout's team. Instead, you have to acquire 3 more players in the draft, where you are going to pay sticker price or more due to inflation. With more keepers, at least you have the chance, through skill the previous year, to build pre-draft value.

It doesn't have anything to with Mike Trout's team. Trout is only one player and another team isn't at a disadvantage if they Mccutchen or Stanton and a much better #2 regardless of how many keepers. Fewer keepers equal more parity season to season.

Trout is definitely a huge advantage with his dollar value. You'd have an argument if no there were no salaries, but there are.

Trout is definitely a huge advantage with his dollar value. You'd have an argument if no there were no salaries, but there are. Of course Trout's team has an advantage but it doesn't change (much) based on the number of keepers. He's just one player. Imo limited keeper leagues aren't that great. Either go the full dynasty route or redraft. With limited keepers the draft portion is unexciting but you don't really get to build a team either.
