Let me preface that this question comes from a desire for a more realistic Yahoo H2H points based league
When our head-to-head points 2014 league started, most teams filled their 6 bench positions with 3 hitters and 3 pitchers. By the time the league ended, all serious competitors has filled their 6 bench positions with Starting Pitchers in order to maximize the points accumulated by 2-starters. Many teams had 11 starting pitchers that were switched in and out as their games came up during a week, as our rosters were set to Daily.
This, while legal, is not very "realistic," as a single MLB team usually starts 5 SP per week, not 5 plus a full bench of 6!
My main question is: How can I limit teams from starting more than 5 SP a week while still maintaining "daily" roster flexibility for injuries?
The only solutions I can think of are: 1. Set editing rosters to once a week rather than daily. However, if someone gets put on the DL after you have set your roster, you are screwed, so this is not an ideal solution. 2. Limiting the number of bench positions, so that teams cannot start an "unrealistic" number of SP every week. However, this still does not stop someone from filling their entire bench with SP anyway.
My ideal solution would be to set the "position type" of bench roster positions, but Yahoo does not allow this. I would rather be able to set 3 bench hitter spots and 3 bench pitcher spots, rather than 6 overall bench spots.
Any ideas?

ESPN allows you to set a weekly Start Limit for SP. In my H2H Points League, we've settled on 10 as the magic number of starts. It has worked for us for the past 3 seasons now, very well. If your Yahoo League cannot force this, then make it a Rule within the league, with each person in charge of monitoring their opponent. Have it say that if anyone goes over the 10 Start Limit, the highest score(s) of the day that forced them over the limit, will be deducted from their score -- that way it's a penalty (i.e., if I go into Sunday with 9 starts, and start 3 guys, then I get my Top 2 SP performances of the day deducted). Make sure that you specify that even if a guy is started in the RP spot of the roster, it still counts as a start. If a pitcher starts a game, it counts towards the allotted 10 (or whatever number you settle on). This also should prevent anyone in your league who tries to stream SP, which this format just begs to be done.
Another idea would be to have a Points format that more heavily favors hitters than pitchers. One that makes it beneficial to carry a bench bat or two for off-days and/or platooning purposes. Here is the Point Format that my league uses (it's far from perfect, and we have tweaked it a few times, to more suit our tastes, and may do so again this winter):
Batting Singles (1B) 1 Doubles (2B) 2 Triples (3B) 3 Home Runs (HR) 4 Walks (BB) 1 Runs Scored (R) 1.5 Runs Batted In (RBI) 1.5 Stolen Bases (SB) 2.5 Strikeouts (K) -0.5 Hit by Pitch (HBP) 1 Caught Stealing (CS) -1 Hitting for the Cycle (CYC) 5
Pitching Innings Pitched (IP) 1.5 Earned Runs (ER) -1 Wins (W) 6 Losses (L) -3 Saves (SV) 5 Blown Saves (BS) -2 Strikeouts (K) 1 Hits Allowed (H) -0.5 Walks Issued (BB) -0.5 Shutouts (SO) 6 Holds (HD) 2.5 Complete Games (CG) 6 Quality Starts (QS) 6 No Hitters (NH) 6 Perfect Games (PG) 6
This all makes 'purists' cringe, but it's honestly the most fun I've ever had playing fantasy baseball. Good luck.

That is a good idea, if worst comes to worst, we'll just do it by hand. After searching around today, I found out that ESPN FBB had a start limit to SP, which seems like the perfect solution. If Yahoo does not implement something similar, we may switch over there. Thanks for the info

Our H2H league (24 teams) has a rule that you are only allowed to start 5 pitchers in a given week. It has to be monitored but people only accidentally break the rule now. the hard part will be getting the other owners to buy into pitcher streaming as a problem. Many will just feel that is how H2H is supposed to work.

the hard part will be getting the other owners to buy into pitcher streaming as a problem. Many will just feel that is how H2H is supposed to work. This will be the challenge indeed for you, Dillon. One would have to write a speech, or call each individual owner, explaining why you want the league to resemble a true baseball team. Just because most H2H leagues allow streaming of SP doesn't mean your league has to if your intentions are clearly defined. Good luck.

I always hated streaming SP in H2H (points or cat) but Roto is a different nut all together.
I monitor the starts and will put all pitching values to zero excluding Saves if an owner goes over the limit so it basically hurts the owner and could cost him a Win.
It is not hard to manage your starts and I allow 8 starts per period.
I don't use Yahoo but if it allows you to change the scoring then I would let people know that they are being watched and will pay the price for not playing by the rules.
