Donaldson to the Jays for Lawrie, graveman, barreto, and nolin.
Donaldson is actually under control for a year longer than Lawrie. Pretty big downgrade for a few minor leaguers.

I'm still very angry about this, but I do understand the thinking that Butler+Lawrie = Donaldson.
Doesn't make me like it

Does this mean that Lawrie breaks out in 2015, and Donaldson becomes a tremendous bust? No. But it doesn't NOT mean that, either. Deep thoughts.

Beane is just ahead of the game again. As we revert back to non-steroid era status, 28+ year-olds are back to being considered on the downside of their career. whereas, 24-year old Lawrie's can still improve a lot over the next 3 years.
Everyone will laugh and say, "that Billy Beane did it again" 3 years from now when Donaldson is a bench bat and Lawrie is making his 2nd straight all-star appearance. At which point, Beane will trade Lawrie for a bunch of what looks like junk. Rinse, repeat.

I agree that Donaldson has probably peaked, but I also think his perceived value was quite a bit higher than what they got back. He's much, much better than even a healthy Lawrie, and none of those minor leaguers seem all that valuable.

I think moving him was the right move in an offseason where several teams were looking to plug a 3B hole, but I just don't think they timed it correctly. If they had waited until Headley signed, they could have potentially landed a sweeter package from one of four or five teams who I'm sure would love to get their hands on an All-Star caliber 3B and are looking at taking a minus at the 3B position. If it gets to February and nobody bites, won't that Blue Jays package still be available? The only thing I think makes sense is that the A's scouting department is very high on the particular players the team received, even if they aren't household names

Billy obviously likes the SPs in the deal much more then the rest of the world. Nolin is supposedly a "back of the rotation" guy, and yet Baseball Prospectus had him #97 prospect in the game pre-2013. Apart from 2014 he has fabulous numbers, so maybe this is a buy low. I'm just hoping he hasn't got (what I perceive) the "I've been in the minors longer then I should be" malaise that can wreck some prospects. Graveman looks like a once off fluke, and then you see he threw 167 IP for 2 HRs in 2014. I know age-for-level and all that jazz, but it's still impressive. Also, if he has the nous and courage to successfully add a pitch (a cutter) in his first full pro year, he's someone I want on my team. www.athleticsnation.com/2014/12/1/7310407/athletics-trade-josh-donaldson-prospects-franklin-barreto-sean-nolin-kendall-gravemanDoes the left-handedness of Nolin mean Billy is definitely flipping Kazmir and his $11mil salary? If losing Kaz + Donaldson means we snag Chase Headley for 3B and have Lawrie for 2B, I'm in.

I think Barreto is the interesting part of the trade personally. Moneyball might have focused on staying away from 5 tool guys but Billy seems to like toolsy guys that he can pick up on the cheap. I would not be surprised if he skyrockets up prospect lists a year from now. At which time Billy trades him since he will be risky but valuable.

Beane is more active than most fantasy owners. I don't even know what to expect from the A's this year. Are they a .500 team or are they actually good?
I love what the Rays did. I called the Asdrubal signing elsewhere as a signing to make Zobrist expendable simply so they can trade him and restock the farm system. Robertson looks like a damn good prospect. Asdrubal isn't as good as Zobrist but 1 yr Asdrubal + Robertson > 1 yr Zobrist. I didn't expect them to trade both Zobrist and Yunel but they have been motivated to save money this offseason. I wouldn't love that as a Rays fan.
