If they spend lots of money on Shields which is being reported they will be in even a worse position, hopefully they don't!...

It doesn't really make sense to get Shields (a lot of pitching already) but why would they be in a worse position?

I still find it strange that the Padres went after Shields considering the pitching that they have but they appear committed to going for it this season and if you have unspent money then you have wasted an opportunity. In addition the Padres have money coming off of the books the next couple of seasons.
This type of contract for Shields could look very bad soon though. I wasn't a big fan of his going into the offseason. He seems like a guy that suddenly becomes ineffective although perhaps he can hold off that inevitable decline by pitching in Petco.

I agree.Yes his numbers should be rather good in SD BUT he's 33 and has a career 3.73 era!!! This could be an anchor for the Padres eventually.

I think the word anchor is used to liberally in the baseball payroll world. It's a 4 yr contract. The Padres have a lot of money coming off of the books in the next year. Helton's contract couldn't anchor the Rockies. Mauer's contract doesn't anchor the Twins (they still have money to spend).
One interesting thing about the Kemp trade that I didn't notice before now. The cash from the Dodgers was paid up front. 18M this year with only 3.5M/yr thereafter.
